On May 15, 2024, the German Heron TP (GHTP), developed by UAV PEO at the Directorate of Defense Research and Development within the Ministry of Defense (IMoD) of Israel in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), successfully conducted its maiden flight over Germany. This Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) was specifically tailored to meet the unique operational requirements of the German Ministry of Defence, resulting from a joint venture involving IAI, IMoD’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D), and Airbus.
The development of the GHTP was marked by a close partnership among Airbus, IAI, DDR&D, and the German Armed Forces, which ensured that the RPAS not only boasts advanced performance features but is also operationally ready, enhancing the capabilities of the German Armed Forces. The historic test flight included senior representatives from the German Air Force, DDR&D at IMoD, Airbus, and IAI. This event marks a significant milestone toward achieving full operational capability.
Mr. Boaz Levy, President and CEO of Israel Aerospace Industries, remarked, “The deployment of the Heron TP (GHTP) RPAS in Germany represents a milestone achievement for IAI, reinforcing our position as a leader in cutting-edge aerospace and defense solutions on a global scale. This collaboration lays the groundwork for ongoing innovation and teamwork in addressing the evolving challenges within the defense sector.”
Dr. Daniel Gold, Head of DDR&D at IMoD, stated, “We are immensely proud to witness the maiden flight of the German Heron TP. This collaboration exemplifies the robust partnership between Israel and Germany, leveraging advanced technology to secure a strategic military advantage. The GHTP enhances Germany’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities while promoting interoperability with our allies.”
Mr. Moshe Levy, IAI VP and General Manager of the Military Aircraft Group, expressed, “IAI is pleased to announce this advancement in the German Heron TP project. We extend our gratitude to our partners at Airbus and the Ministry of Defense for their collaboration. It is a point of great pride for us that the Heron UAV manufactured by IAI is now operational in German airspace. We stand ready to support the German Ministry of Defence as needed and look forward to ensuring a successful program.”
The Head of UAV PEO at DDR&D remarked, “We are excited by this historic achievement as the Heron-TP RPAS completes its first flight over German airspace, a success made possible by the cooperative efforts of the Israeli and German governments, alongside IAI and Airbus. The Heron-TP RPAS integrates advanced capabilities through cutting-edge technology.”
Mr. Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Air Power at Airbus Defence and Space, highlighted, “The German Heron TP is the continuation of our successful collaboration with IAI and the German Armed Forces established during the Heron 1 program. The RPAS has already proven vital in ensuring the safety of German armed forces in deployments to Afghanistan and Mali, as well as humanitarian missions. The Heron TP is poised to further enhance operational performance and provide additional capabilities, including maritime surveillance, owing to its modular design.”
About the German Heron TP (GHTP) RPAS:
The German Heron TP (GHTP) RPAS is a strategic platform capable of supporting a variety of sensors and is the result of a unique collaboration between Israel and Germany based on a contract awarded to Airbus and IAI. As part of an operational turnkey solution provided by Airbus, the GHTP will address gaps in persistent airborne intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). The project encompasses not just the provision and modification of the RPAS, but also the training of Air Force personnel, operational support, maintenance, and flight services.
This RPAS is equipped to carry out various forms of optical and imaging radar reconnaissance, with options for additional signals intelligence (SIGINT) and maritime surveillance capabilities.
The German Heron TP (GHTP) RPAS significantly enhances the strategic and tactical capabilities of the German Armed Forces, ensuring interoperability with NATO partners. It is worth noting that this RPAS is the only system in its class certified in accordance with STANAG 4671.
The Heron TP represents the advanced version within IAI’s Heron family of RPAS, which has a proven record including the Heron 1, successfully utilized by the German Air Force in missions across Afghanistan and Mali.
