Strengthening Europe’s sovereignty: Airbus and Quantum Systems work on ecosystem for aerial reconnaissance

Paris, France, 16 June 2025 – In a significant move for European defense, Quantum Systems and Airbus Defence and Space have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Paris Air Show 2025, signaling a commitment to enhance their strategic cooperation. The focus of their collaboration is on integrating tactical aerial reconnaissance into modern command and information systems, thereby bolstering European sovereignty.

These efforts are aimed at rapidly strengthening the capabilities of the armed forces while ensuring technological sovereignty in Europe. As geopolitical tensions rise and innovation cycles accelerate within the defense sector, the demand for resilient, interoperable, and ready-to-use airborne surveillance and information systems becomes increasingly urgent.

Unlike other providers with conventional, closed system architectures, Quantum Systems and Airbus emphasize transparency and openness in their AI-supported reconnaissance and impact networks. This approach empowers European users with full control over the technology, data, and ongoing system development.

The two companies plan to further develop existing initiatives centered around open interfaces, digital battlefields, and advanced simulation environments. This user-centric focus draws lessons directly from recent battlefield developments in Ukraine, where Quantum Systems operates a production facility and R&D hub.

Florian Seibel, CEO of Quantum Systems, stated, “This partnership is a strong signal for the European defense industry. Together with Airbus, we are creating a networked, autonomous, and sovereign ecosystem for unmanned systems—operational, interoperable, and open to collaborations with partners. We will integrate the Quantum Systems MOSAIC architecture with the Airbus CombatCloud, establishing a comprehensive reconnaissance network that extends from high altitudes down to the tactical level on the battlefield.”

Adding to this perspective, Mike Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space, remarked, “This partnership aligns with Airbus’ strategic vision of fostering a European ecosystem in military aviation. We are focused on ensuring Europe’s sovereignty in AI-supported mission systems and facilitating crewed-uncrewed teaming. By adopting a ‘software first’ mindset, we aim to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of military missions while ensuring system adaptability for future challenges.”

The alliance between Quantum Systems and Airbus is a dynamic collaboration, poised to advance European defense capabilities through innovation, agility, international reach, and deep expertise in artificial intelligence.
