Design of uncrewed vessels for new ASW frigates gets underway
The Royal Netherlands Navy is set to enhance its capabilities with the development of a 12-metre-long uncrewed surface vessel (USV) for its new Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) frigates. The Ministry of Defence has approved Dutch Naval Design (DND) to initiate the design process and finalize the procurement of a FLASH dipping sonar from Thales, which will be integrated into this vessel. DND collaborates with various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Defence, industry, academia, and research institutions.
A consortium known as the USV Alliance, consisting of multiple contributors from different sizes and technical backgrounds, has submitted a proposal aimed at delivering the required expertise for this project.
Dipping Sonars
In the design phase of the new 12-metre uncrewed vessels, builders are tasked with integrating novel systems from the outset. Notably, the Compact Flash sonar from Thales Underwater Systems France will enhance the frigate’s surveillance capabilities without revealing its position.
Anti-Submarine Warfare
The Royal Netherlands Navy plans to utilize these USVs extensively in anti-submarine warfare roles, including submarine detection and tracking. The vessels are also expected to serve as a deterrent in submarine-rich environments, thereby significantly bolstering the effectiveness and efficiency of naval operations.
By employing uncrewed vessels, the new ASW frigates will achieve extended operational ranges and improved responsiveness, ultimately strengthening the combat capabilities of the maritime forces.
