Arkansas Advanced Propulsion Facilities Build-Out Accelerates

The Arkansas Advanced Propulsion Facilities (AAPF) is poised to become the premier hub for medium and large solid rocket motor production in the United States. Since breaking ground in November 2025, the project has marked significant milestones, affirming L3Harris’ commitment to rapid capability delivery. Upon completion, the campus is projected to enhance large solid rocket motor production capacity six-fold.

Construction crews have accomplished 90% of the civil construction earthwork required for over 20 building pads, facilitating utility installations from main roads to each designated production area. Current efforts involve building layout planning, concrete slab foundation placement, and the assembly of metal structures.

Following these milestones, the focus will shift to fitting out the interiors of the facilities, preparing them for operational readiness upon completion. The procurement of long lead equipment continues, with critical equipment deliveries set to start later this year after essential design reviews.

In the upcoming months, slab foundations and metal building assemblies will be finalized for multiple structures, including the installation of key production equipment like eight new propellant cure ovens. This progress is a crucial advance toward establishing operational capabilities. The first completed buildings are expected to be handed over to production teams by mid-2027.

L3Harris’ multi-billion-dollar investment in solid rocket motor capacity expansion includes over $1 billion allocated to enhance the Camden, Arkansas, site. The AAPF is being designed with state-of-the-art capabilities that will transform the production processes for medium and large solid rocket motors.

Upgraded operational processes, automated controls, and advanced material handling systems featuring autonomous mobile robots will enhance workflow and minimize production cycle times. Safety features, such as automated crane position identification and secured door systems, will ensure safe operations while accommodating higher production volume.

The facility’s design also includes provisions for future expansions. Pre-planned constructions, including an optional second casting facility, can be rapidly initiated if demand necessitates increased production capacity. This strategy is aimed at maintaining agility in scaling operations to meet growing demand.

Across its solid rocket motor production locations in Alabama, Arkansas, and Virginia, L3Harris is establishing approximately 60 new facilities and augmenting its manufacturing area by over 1 million square feet. The AAPF is at the center of this strategic transformation, specifically designed to support solid rocket motor development for tactical missiles, air defense systems, hypersonic vehicles, interceptors, and missile defense targets.
