Why defense resilience depends on industrial capacity | Hanwha
Hanwha Defense USA (HDUSA), a subsidiary of Hanwha Aerospace, has secured a contract with the U.S. Army to deliver six K9 Mobile Howitzer prototypes for the Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) program, with an option for an additional 12 units. This program aims to evaluate mobile artillery systems that have the potential to replace some of the Army’s current towed cannons, enabling troops to fire and reposition more efficiently. The Army’s initial acquisition plans suggest a possible procurement of up to 500 MTC systems if the program advances to production.
The K9 howitzer is already in use in over 2,500 units around the world. However, Hanwha’s ambitions in the U.S. go beyond merely supplying these howitzers. The company is also focused on enhancing local industrial capacity by investing in production facilities, supply chain management, and workforce development, ensuring sustained operational capabilities within the U.S.
Prior to the MTC contract award, Mike Smith, COO of Hanwha Defense USA and President of Land Systems, emphasized the importance of expanding artillery capability beyond just the howitzer.

Our proven capabilities throughout the entire technology spectrum enable us to offer mature, integrated systems.”
Hanwha’s broader commitment is materializing in the United States. In Opelika, Alabama, HDUSA’s integration and test facility will facilitate production ramp-up, workforce training, sustained support, and future enhancements. Moreover, Hanwha is further investing in the U.S. defense industrial base with a new advanced manufacturing campus located at Pine Bluff Arsenal in Arkansas. This initiative, under an Enhanced Use Lease agreement with the Army, represents a capital investment of US$2.2 billion dedicated to bolstering domestic munitions production and is projected to generate nearly 400 jobs over the next seven years.
The award of the prototypes, the establishment of the integration site, and the advanced manufacturing campus all highlight a strategy that intertwines procurement with the essential workforce, production capabilities, and infrastructure needed to ensure long-term scaling and sustainability of military capabilities.
