BlackSky Secures Exclusive $99 Million Contract with U.S. Government for Cutting-Edge Solutions

BlackSky Technology Inc. secures $2 million initial funding to enhance the design of advanced large aperture payloads for next-generation Earth observation and space domain awareness platforms.

HERNDON, Va. (March 31, 2026) — BlackSky Technology Inc. (NYSE: BKSY) has been awarded a significant multi-year, sole-source IDIQ contract valued at $99 million by the U.S. government to enhance its capabilities in advanced next-generation technologies. The company will utilize an initial $2 million to fast-track the development of an advanced large aperture optical payload tailored for Earth observation and space domain awareness.

Brian O’Toole, CEO of BlackSky, stated, “This prestigious award validates our strategic investments in cutting-edge space technologies, showcasing next-generation space architectures as part of our long-term constellation development plan. Collaborating with the U.S. government will enable us to expedite these essential technologies through our advanced multi-year development initiative. Our focus will be on promptly deploying advanced systems that incorporate future-generation payloads alongside our reliable Gen-3 space architecture.”

This AFRL contract aims to broaden commercial space-based intelligence capabilities and mission applications, offering distinctions from the existing Gen-2 and Gen-3 monitoring systems as well as the forthcoming AROS broad area search system. It is anticipated that this partnership will enhance innovations in optical imaging and overall platform utility, while also supporting innovative applications for high-cadence Earth monitoring and observation of objects in low Earth, geostationary, and cis-lunar orbits.

O’Toole added, “We plan to leverage the unique, highly scalable core technology of Gen-3 in every incremental development along our roadmap, viewing the AROS broad area search system as the transition to our more expansive very large-aperture optical imagery capabilities outlined in this contract. These advancements are designed to deliver exceptional high-resolution imaging and collection performance linked with low latency space-based communications.”

The satellites engineered under this contract are expected to function as both data storage and processing hubs, integrating seamlessly with on-orbit data centers to create a widespread AI-enabled communications environment. Additionally, these satellites are anticipated to interface with both current and future launch vehicles, enhancing their operational flexibility.

With a journey from establishing foundational Gen-2 capabilities through the evolution to Gen-3 and the upcoming AROS systems, BlackSky has adeptly developed and deployed a mission-oriented AI-enabled architecture designed to meet both present and future demands for dynamic, real-time monitoring. By prioritizing speed across our organization, this software-driven architecture, combined with our vertically integrated advanced satellite manufacturing capabilities, empowers us to swiftly place the world’s most advanced space-based intelligence systems into orbit.
