RTX invests $100 million to accelerate radar testing and interceptor production in Rhode Island
Project to bring 150 high-tech jobs to the state
PORTSMOUTH, R.I., June 8, 2026 — Raytheon, part of RTX (NYSE: RTX), is committing $100 million to enhance its facility located in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. This investment aims to expedite testing of the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) and increase production capacity for the Patriot® GEM-T subcomponents to meet escalating global demand.
Tom Laliberty, president of Land & Air Defense Systems at Raytheon, stated, “This investment strengthens our ability to deliver critical air and missile defense capabilities to customers around the world. Expanding in Portsmouth allows us to scale production, advance LTAMDS testing, and ensure the U.S. Army and our international partners receive these systems as quickly as possible.”
This announcement follows the company’s recent groundbreaking on a $53 million expansion of its Radar Production Facility in Andover, Massachusetts, which took place eight months prior. The LTAMDS is specifically engineered to counter advanced threats, such as hypersonic weapons.
Raytheon currently holds contracts for multiple LTAMDS radars for the U.S. Army and Poland. The program has achieved significant milestones, including its recent ninth successful flight test, where the radar’s multiple arrays tracked and intercepted a surrogate target.
The Patriot Advanced Capability-2 (PAC-2) Guidance Enhanced Missile-Tactical (GEM-T), designed to intercept diverse airborne threats, including tactical ballistic missiles, serves as a key effector within the combat-proven Patriot air and missile defense system.
RTX has maintained a presence in Rhode Island for over 60 years and currently employs more than 850 individuals. Raytheon’s Portsmouth facility plays a vital role in supporting undersea technology, combat systems, and radar systems.
