Saab launches next generation 9LV naval combat system

Saab has launched its next generation 9LV naval combat system, a significant upgrade designed to enhance situational awareness and decision-making capabilities for naval commanders. By integrating sensors, weapons, and command-and-control functions into a unified system, 9LV offers crews a comprehensive operational picture essential for modern maritime operations.

As threats in the naval domain become increasingly complex and unpredictable, the 9LV system is engineered to support commanders under pressure. It helps maintain control of the battlespace, ensuring effective protection of naval vessels while contributing to allied joint operations.

The 9LV features a data-centric architecture with a standardized information model and a commitment to zero-trust cyber security. This setup enables secure and fast information sharing across the naval force. Additionally, the separation of mission-critical combat functionalities from flexible, cloud-native applications allows for the rapid adoption of new capabilities as threats evolve, without jeopardizing core combat systems.

Moreover, this advanced combat system is designed to adapt rapidly to changing operational contexts, remaining resilient in the face of attacks. It allows for the faster introduction of new capabilities, ensuring that naval forces remain ahead of emerging threats throughout the 9LV’s service life.

Michael Skarped, head of Saab’s Naval Combat Systems unit, emphasizes the importance of this adaptability, stating, “By allowing naval forces to adapt to evolving threats while protecting the integrity of core combat functions, 9LV stays relevant against emerging challenges over the ship’s operational life.”

Additionally, the system is aligned with NATO objectives for interoperability and data exchange, enabling seamless integration of tactical information across naval, air, land, and joint forces. This capability enhances commanders’ ability to contribute to a collective operational picture, coordinate actions across domains, and respond effectively in coalition scenarios.

The scalability of the 9LV system makes it suitable for various platforms ranging from large multi-mission combatants to smaller vessels, supporting future hybrid fleet concepts that entail both crewed and uncrewed systems. This versatility ensures that naval forces can integrate new platforms and sensors as they arise, enhancing operational effectiveness without constraints imposed by legacy systems.

The next generation 9LV combat system not only manages the complexities of naval combat but also empowers commanders to anticipate, adapt, and succeed in diverse maritime engagements. The result is improved survivability for ships, enhanced protection for allied forces, and a decisive edge in the current maritime battlespace.
