Rheinmetall and its Commitment to Sustainable Mobility

Rheinmetall is actively engaged in the evolution of electric mobility, reflecting a significant transformation both within the industry and society at large. With a rich history spanning over a century, Rheinmetall consistently drives forward-thinking development in its products. This first installment of our two-part focus highlights the sustainable technologies incorporated in Rheinmetall’s hybrid vehicles and gasoline engines.

Innovations for Hybrid Sustainability

Rheinmetall’s commitment to emissions and pollutant reduction extends beyond vehicle emissions to encompass fuel vapor emissions as well. One of the key innovations the company offers is the Fuel Tank Isolation Valve (FTIV) designed specifically for hybrid vehicles. As an integral component of the Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP), the FTIV minimizes evaporative emissions.

The FTIV acts by shutting off the fuel tank supply during electric driving modes, ensuring the connection between the tank and the engine is hermetically sealed while the combustion engine is inactive. This system regulates the fuel vapors emanating from the tank to direct them towards the activated carbon filter.

Upon reaching the activated carbon tank, the filtered fuel vapors require regular flushing. To facilitate this process, Rheinmetall has engineered an innovative and compact solution—the Electrical Vapor Pump (EVP). Launched into series production in 2018, the EVP is a pioneering electric pump that actively cleans and flushes fuel vapor from the carbon tank, serving various clients across NAFTA countries and China.
