Saab expands its engagement in the space domain
Saab has recently signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing collaboration in critical areas related to future multi-domain and space-enabled capabilities.
The strategic importance of space is increasing within the defense and security sectors, with military capabilities becoming more reliant on space-based solutions for communications, navigation, surveillance, and early warning systems.
In Sweden, numerous entities possess robust capabilities across various segments of the space value chain. Saab is seeking to leverage these strengths by forging partnerships that integrate technologies and systems into operational frameworks.
“As space gains prominence in defense and security, Saab is committed to strengthening Sweden’s capabilities in this area. Our experience in integrating advanced defense and security solutions positions us well to take on this responsibility. The MoUs we have signed with SSC Space, OHB Sweden, and Ericsson are pivotal steps toward establishing ourselves as a key system integrator in the space domain,” noted Marcus Wandt, head of Group Strategy & Technology at Saab.
The MoU with SSC Space outlines a plan to explore synergies between Saab’s system integration expertise and SSC Space’s capabilities, which include ground station networks, mission engineering, high-altitude platform services, and orbital launch infrastructure such as the Esrange Space Center. This collaboration aims to develop relevant space capabilities in support of multi-domain operations.
Through the agreement with OHB Sweden, the focus will be on integrating current and future satellite systems with Saab’s multi-domain solutions. This partnership is designed to enhance operational awareness, connectivity, and resilience by incorporating space-based capabilities across air, land, sea, and cyber domains.
With Ericsson, Saab intends to analyze potential collaborative efforts aimed at integrating terrestrial and space-based communication solutions, which will bolster future defense, security, and societal resilience.
