Automation is significantly enhancing the efficiency of software updates for naval vessels. As developers create new code, it can now be forwarded directly through a factory process that includes automated testing and a range of scanning tools, such as cybersecurity evaluations.
This streamlined approach significantly decreases the validation workload associated with each software push post-delivery, ultimately saving time and reducing costs.
The factory is set to support the U.S. Navy’s new schedule for quarterly software updates, a notable enhancement from the previous annual update timeline. Moreover, it possesses the capability to provide more frequent updates if necessary.
This rapid update capability is particularly vital for platforms like the Zumwalt-class destroyer, which relies extensively on sophisticated computerized systems for navigation, weaponry, and operational management. Raytheon serves as the prime mission systems equipment integrator for all electric and combat systems on these destroyers. The reliance on an all-electric power system and modular design underscores the importance of swift and reliable updates to ensure ongoing efficiency and adaptability.
The factory enables a consistent software baseline across varied computing environments, including:
- native, where software is tailored specifically for the ship’s physical hardware;
- virtual, where the software operates independently of the underlying hardware;
- and containerized, which combines the flexibility of virtual software while being optimized for the native operating system.
