Successful launch of the FV-014 Loitering Munition System

Rheinmetall has successfully demonstrated its FV-014 loitering munition system from the Containerized Missile Launcher, a versatile multi-launch platform designed for guided missiles and loitering munitions. Both the FV-014 and the Containerized Missile Launcher are products of Rheinmetall’s in-house development efforts. This notable product demonstration took place in July 2026 at the National Test Centre for Unmanned Aerial Systems at the German Aerospace Centre located in Cochstedt, Saxony-Anhalt.

As part of a customer demonstration, the FV-014 was launched from a Rheinmetall HX truck, executed both from a stationary position and while in motion. During this demonstration, the system engaged in various simulated operational profiles and attack missions. The successful execution of these tests underscores Rheinmetall’s expertise in modern loitering munition systems and represents a significant advancement in the expansion of its unmanned weapons portfolio for a range of operational applications.

Designed for high mobility on contemporary battlefields, the FV-014 integrates reconnaissance, target identification, and precision strike capabilities within one system, operating effectively at ranges of up to 100 kilometres. Featuring state-of-the-art sensor technology, enhanced network capability, and robust resistance to GNSS interference through a high degree of autonomy, the FV-014 is well-suited for deployment in challenging operational environments. It is capable of engaging both armoured and unarmoured targets.

The loitering munition is launched from a transport and launch container utilizing a booster, which can be modularly integrated into the Containerized Missile Launcher. Depending on the container model selected, this modular launcher can accommodate up to 18 FV-014 units. Once ejected, the aircraft deploys its folding wings and transitions to aerodynamic flight, offering a flight duration of up to 70 minutes, providing operators ample time for reconnaissance, target selection, and combat decision-making.

Control of the FV-014 is managed via a user-friendly ground station that maintains permanent human-in-the-loop oversight. This capability allows operators to identify and track targets, launch precise strikes, and abort missions as necessary, adapting to evolving operational conditions.

Weighing approximately 22 kilograms, the FV-014 carries a payload of around six kilograms. It is equipped with an HEDP (High-Explosive Dual Purpose) warhead that can penetrate more than 600 millimetres of solid armour steel, making it effective against both armoured and unarmoured targets, as well as infrastructure.

The system’s electrically powered propeller ensures a quiet approach, and its design minimizes both radar and infrared signatures. The FV-014 not only supports precise individual strikes but also swarm operations, enabling simultaneous engagement of multiple threats or overwhelming enemy defense systems. Plans for future use include deployment from mobile land vehicle platforms and naval units.

The Containerized Missile Launcher serves as a highly flexible, modular launch platform for systems like the FV-014. Built on a standard ISO container base, it can be deployed in both stationary setups and mobile configurations, including Rheinmetall HX trucks and naval vessels. The 20-foot configuration has the capacity to house up to 18 FV-014s, ensuring full compatibility with existing transport, logistics, and operational frameworks. Its integration with command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I) systems facilitates flexible launches by local operators through radio or satellite communication. An integrated power supply assures reliable long-term operation, even in remote areas, while the reliance on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components contributes to lower life-cycle costs. The system also features a built-in ‘sleeper’ capability for remote activation.
