F‑16C and F‑16D Testing Expands the Envelope

L3Harris’ Viper Shield is currently recognized as the sole electronic warfare system in production that maintains a compact form factor suitable for various F-16 block models. This system can be integrated internally or utilized as a self-contained pod, effectively functioning as digital armor for the aircraft. Its software-defined architecture, leveraging commercial off-the-shelf technology, significantly reduces pod weight and facilitates easier upgrades.

The F‑16C serves as the primary combat variant, enabling engineers to evaluate system performance under genuine combat configurations, including loadouts and electronic warfare profiles. In contrast, the F‑16D, frequently employed for training and multi-crew missions, allows for the validation of system maturity across a wider range of flight conditions and mission scenarios.

During testing, Barnes emphasized the strong partnership with the U.S. Air Force testing community, which is vital for confirming both capability and mission readiness.
