Rheinmetall to modernise F123 frigate for the German Navy
Rheinmetall has secured a contract to modernise the F123-class frigate, BAYERN, which measures 143 meters in length, with the modernization project set to commence towards the end of the second quarter of 2026. This initiative aims to maintain the operational readiness of the German Navy frigate, which has been in service since 1996, ensuring its capabilities are up to current operational standards until at least 2035. The project’s value is estimated to be in the mid-three-digit million euro range.
Under the service life extension program, significant systems of the BAYERN will undergo extensive upgrades at Rheinmetall’s Neue Jadewerft shipyard located in Wilhelmshaven, continuing through 2029. The modernization will include the replacement of the Combat Management System (CMS), an overhaul of vital shipboard engineering systems, and enhancements to the radar sensor suite. Moreover, the propulsion and drive systems will be revamped, alongside upgrades to key anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities. These enhancements are designed to bring the F123-class frigate up to contemporary technological standards, thereby significantly bolstering its operational capabilities for future missions.
This contract underscores the strategic value of Rheinmetall’s service sector within its Naval Systems division. The division emphasizes long-term maintenance, modernization, and lifecycle support, essential for ensuring the operational readiness of complex naval assets over extended periods.

The BAYERN is currently stationed at Neue Jadewerft, where significant components are being removed. Following this initial phase, the frigate will be moved to the shipyard’s dry dock for further modifications.
