
Singapore selects Thales for next-generation AI-powered air traffic management system serving one of Asia’s busiest airspaces
The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) has awarded Thales a significant contract to develop the NexGen Air Traffic Management System (ATMS) along with advanced air traffic control radars. This initiative marks a crucial advancement towards establishing a more efficient, safer, and sustainable aviation ecosystem in one of Asia’s busiest airspaces.
Set to enter operational service by 2030, the NexGen ATMS will replace the existing LORADS III system. Utilising Thales’ TopSky – ATC One solution, the new system is expected to manage up to one million aircraft movements annually, ensuring air traffic control services can be provided safely and efficiently.
Enhancing operational capabilities, the NexGen ATMS harnesses advanced cybersecurity protocols and Artificial Intelligence technologies. This integration creates a highly automated environment that improves controller decision-making and boosts operational efficiency, all while increasing flight safety.
Supporting the growth of regional air traffic
As Singapore prepares for a surge in air travel demand, the NexGen ATMS is designed to facilitate a fully integrated air traffic control framework, leveraging real-time decision-support tools. At its core lies Thales’ TopSky – ATC One, which streamlines workflows through a user-friendly human-machine interface. The system’s AI-driven TopSky – Sequencer optimises aircraft operations, significantly reducing delays and carbon emissions.
This next-generation system also adheres to the latest international standards, incorporating robust cybersecurity measures that meet the requirements set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and local Singaporean regulations, ensuring future scalability and adaptability.
Advanced radar technologies for better surveillance
Beyond the ATMS upgrade, Thales is set to deploy two next-generation air traffic control radars, capable of providing continuous aircraft detection, even under challenging weather conditions. These radars will be strategically integrated into the NexGen ATMS architecture, enhancing situational awareness and providing air traffic controllers access to precise data for flight management.
